My dad has always quoted the Bible when talking about having a life plan. “Without a vision the people perish.” (Proverbs). I was with him this past week helping to take care of my Grandmother and he said it again. Usually I hear him and just dismiss it, but as I prepared lunch for my grandmother, and watched her eat, I started to think about where I am in life in relation to her and the life I would have to ruminate on if I make it to her age. What is my vision and specifically what vision do I have for my writing?
When it comes to writing I have always only said I want to be published. This is the ultimate goal for most writers which makes the desire unoriginal and certainly not visionary.
Of course publishing can be a part of my overall writing plan, but really, what do I want writing to be for me? Why this medium of creative expression? When I’m my grandmother’s age (91), what will I think about the work I created? What will my family, friends, and colleagues say about my work?
Writing is the way I share with the world. I have been blessed with a talent and desire to tell stories and I want those stories to connect with other people. I want my writing to make the world bigger and smaller. I want to explore different types of writing (expository, persuasive, descriptive, narrative). I want to dabble in different genres. I want to open my mind and heart to experiences that will inform my work and I want others to enjoy reading my work as much as I enjoy writing it. Really, when I think about my writing vision, it is intertwined with the vision I have for my life: To live a life that includes creative expression and experience, travel, financial stability and security, and helping other humans in need. Within this life vision are goals for my writing:
- To increase and refine my writing skills
- To tell unique stories that connect with other humans
- To transition my writing passion into provision
Building a portfolio of completed work will always be at the top of my list. Since I started this journey at the end of 2015, I have written one novel, attempted its revision, and completed a short story that I submitted to a competition earlier this year. As I continue to actively pursue an exciting, full and meaningful life, I will continue to take action to produce (hopefully) quality work. This year I will complete a screenplay and a short story collection.
If there is anything you want to accomplish, any dreams you want to turn into realities, just remember, the vision for your life informs the goals and actions you take. “Without a vision” .. well, you get the idea….
